Public Invited to University Lakes Project Update
Baton Rouge, La. – An open house to update the public on progress of the University Lakes Project will be held Thursday, August 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the LSU Foundation, 3796 Nicholson Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70802.
Attendees are invited to speak directly with members of the project team, who will be on hand to answer questions and provide information on project status and progress.
The restoration project is designed to create a more sustainable aquatic system, improve flood protection, enhance the environment and expand recreational opportunities for the community. The University Lakes Project will improve the health of the six-lake system, preserving these man-made lakes and upgrading surrounding public spaces.
“The University Lakes are a great asset for Baton Rouge, and there is, understandably, a lot of interest in this project,” said Mark Goodson, principal and resilience practice lead of CSRS, one of the lead project advisors. “We look forward to answering residents’ questions about the status and sharing what’s coming next. We also encourage the community to visit universitylakesproject.org for ongoing project updates in real time.”
Phase 1 of construction, which began in 2023 and is currently underway, includes dredging and deepening City Park Lake and Lake Erie, constructing living shorelines around those lakes, improving the existing weir structure at Stanford Avenue and making significant improvements to May Street between City Park Lake and University Lake. Phase 2A, which just started construction, includes deepening College Lake and approximately half of University Lake and constructing living shorelines. Phase 2B, which just received capital outlay funding, will finish deepening University Lake.
The coalition that was formed to restore the lakes includes the State of Louisiana, the City of Baton Rouge and Parish of East Baton Rouge, BREC, LSU and the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. The University Lakes Project is being implemented by University Lakes, LLC, which was established by the LSU Real Estate and Facilities Foundation, an affiliate of the LSU Foundation.
