BATON ROUGE, LA – The University Lakes Restoration Project team has announced that construction crews are scheduled to begin driving piles to support the foundation of the new May Street bridge on Thursday, June 11.
Residents, students, and visitors to the area should expect large construction equipment and intermittent noise during regular business hours while the work is underway. Pile driving operations are expected to continue through June.
The new May Street bridge is a critical infrastructure component of the University Lakes Restoration Project. Once completed, the new bridge will provide a connection for pedestrians and vehicles across a new channel that will connect City Park Lake and University Lake, allowing for continuous water and recreational access beneath the structure.
May Street remains closed to all vehicle, cyclist, and pedestrian traffic between Dalrymple Drive and East Lakeshore Drive, with an expected reopening in the fall of 2026.
The University Lakes Restoration Project is a collaborative effort between LSU, the City of Baton Rouge, BREC, and other state and local partners. The project is transforming the six historic lakes surrounding the LSU campus into a more sustainable ecological system by deepening the lakes, improving flood protection, enhancing aquatic and terrestrial habitats, and expanding outdoor recreational opportunities for the community.
