Recent Spill into Lakes Unrelated to Project Activities

BATON ROUGE, LA – The University Lakes Restoration Project Team shares the community’s concern regarding the localized spill of a tar-like substance discovered in the lakes on Monday, June 1.

Local authorities have investigated the situation and identified the material as a "tackifier," a substance used in road paving. The runoff occurred when a heavy, sudden downpour washed the material from an unrelated roadway project near East Lakeshore Drive into a storm drain emptying into the lake system.

"While this unfortunate incident was entirely unrelated to our ongoing lake restoration operations, any impact to the water quality and local habitat is a matter of great importance to us," said Mark Goodson, principal and resilience practice lead at CSRS. "We will continue to monitor the situation closely and remain fully committed to the long-term restoration and protection of this beautiful community resource."

Currently, environmental cleanup crews and the responsible contractors are on-site managing the recovery.
